A few days ago in Ogden, UT, a young girl was abducted from a playground by a sex offender who convinced her he was there at the request of her mother. The man took her to a Day's Inn where he had already booked a room. Fortunately he was spotted by someone who thought he looked suspicious and was quickly arrested by authorities.
Abductions can take place anywhere, even from your own home, so make sure to give your child a code word to always ask for whenever a stranger might approach. This free alarm could save your child's life. How does this system work? You and other trusted adults, along with your child have one code word (something that it wouldn't be easy for a stranger to guess). If the stranger doesn't know this code word, your child knows to run away, call for help, or make sure to keep the door locked. It's an easy way to add one more precaution to your safety routine.
Martial Arts Or A House Alarm?
Many home security tips suggest the purchase of a home security package or alarm monitoring system.
Other simple, low cost security advice recommends locking windows and doors and keeping a few lights on. Some have suggested self-defense and encourage people to look at increasing physical skills and mental acuity in an effort to protect oneself and minimize vulnerability.
If one is considering such a route, an excellent method of self-defense is martial arts. There are many varieties of martial arts, most of which can be called upon to take down an assailant in the unfortunate event of a personal attack.
It can take years of practice and self discipline to become proficient at these arts, and a burglar could possibly be subdued by a black-belt wearing home owner. However; you never know if an intruder is armed with a knife of gun, and you're putting yourself at considerable personal risk by confronting any criminal. It could prove much more effective and much safer to install a reliable home security alarm and keep a cell phone nearby to immediately call the police if ever your home is broken in to.
Think Again About In-home Traps
Rather than compare home security systems and choose the right legal equipment, some people recklessly take matters into their own hands and create booby traps, thinking that this is their right. After all, it does seem somewhat obvious that one should be able to protect one's own home from intruders by any means possible.
Also, wouldn't setting your own traps be cheaper than buying a service like ADT alarm monitoring?
But beware. Contrary to what some of us might consider common sense, it's illegal to set dangerous traps in your home that could kill or seriously injure an intruder. In fact, there have been cases where a homeowner was actually sued by an injured burglar, and the burglar won. It may be hard to believe, but it's true.
Armed Robbery in Kalamazoo
On August 15, 2008 in Cooper Township, Kalamazoo, MI, an armed robbery took place. According to the Kalamazoo Gazette, the home invasion happened at Cooper's Landing Apartments.
Two gunmen with red bandanas over their faces entered an apartment in the middle of the night, demanding money from the four people reportedly home at the time. Perhaps they also had comments about the lack of a deadbolt or the absence of a home alarm system, but who can say? If they did have such comments, their words may have been muffled by the bandanas. Whether they had remarks regarding a home alarm system or not, they nevertheless took an undisclosed amount of cash and other equipment before fleeing, according a Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office news release.

It may sound obvious to those who own a home alarm system, but one of the easiest ways to protect your home is to lock your doors and windows.
While there are other ways that burglars can get into your house such as squeezing through a pet door, tunneling under the foundation, or coming down your chimney like the anti-Santa Claus, usually it's by means of 1st) doors, and 2nd) windows.
Often, it's because the door or windows weren't even locked! Even if you don't have a burglar alarm and are only just starting to compare home security systems, this simple precaution is the first thing you should do to keep your home safe.
