Christmas is just around the corner, and with it comes the largest and busiest retail shopping period. Retailers are lowering prices, and consumers are coming in herds, which makes shoplifting a major concern. Especially with the economy being the way it is now, fewer employees are able to keep an eye out for such illegal activities, which can lower profits for retailers. This is also bad for the consumer, because if retailers aren’t making a profit, they have to raise the price to make ends meet. This means more and more companies are relying on technology, cameras, and security systems to help the problem. This is where ADT comes into play.
Last year, shoplifting was down due to the increased anti-shoplifting technology, retailers don’t want to miss out on 12 billion dollars like in 2007 from the estimated 27 million shoplifters. However, this season shoplifting is expected to increase due to the economy. A veteran loss prevention executive, ED Wolfe, said “Many retailers are bracing for more shoplifting this season and will be counting on technology to help control theft, particularly as many stores have had to cut back on staff due to the slowing economy.”
This year will bring a different type of shoplifter, however. Richard Mangan, a criminology professor who helped with the study said, “Clearly, shoplifting is going to be a bigger problem than in years past. Times of financial stress could drive individuals who normally would not consider shoplifting, to reconsider attempting this crime.”
With this surge of theft, technology has to keep up. Tags will be placed in all manner of products, from clothing, to food and even makeup. Videos can record and monitor events that can be viewed later, catching criminals in the act. Sophisticated and intelligent cameras can even recognize when items go missing. All these products allow retailers to monitor theft from remote areas. This season, ADT offers a wide portfolio of various products to prevent theft and protect everyone’s interests.
