The number of elderly women living alone, without a spouse or the help of a caretaker, is growing each year. While this is great for the independence of older women, it can also put them at an increased risk for in-home accidents and burglary. Sadly, elderly women are often targeted by criminals because they are seen as vulnerable and susceptible. However, there are certain precautions that elderly women can take to protect themselves and their homes.
Protect Yourself From In-Home Accidents
Keep your routine as simple as possible. If you cook and clean on an everyday basis, keep things out of hard-to-reach places. Keep as many things (cleaning supplies, cups, plates, ect.) at eye level as possible.
You will also want to be extra careful while in the bathroom. Keep mats and rugs on the floor so that water will not make the floor slippery. Install safety bars in the shower and near the toilet so that you can hold onto them when needed. You will also want to install rubber mats on the shower floor and think about having a bench installed so that you can sit down while showering. Ideally, take baths when possible.
Protect Yourself From Burglary, Home Invasion
The most important thing to do is to buy a burglar alarm system. You might also want to consider hiring a professional alarm monitoring company to watch over your system. You will also want to make sure that your home is properly secured. Make it as inconvenient as possible for intruders to enter your home. Install deadbolt locks on doors and windows and get into the habit of using them consistently. You might also want to consider purchasing more extensive home security equipment including automatic timer lights, surveillance cameras and motion detectors.
