Establishing and regularly practicing safe behavior is one of the most important things you can do when it comes to keeping your home safe and protected. Home security is so much more than simply buying a burglar alarm system or avoiding being home alone. It is about being responsible and taking responsibility for your actions. Don't assume that someone else will take care of your home for you. It is up to you to make sure that your home remains safe and protected.
It is a common belief that it takes three weeks of regularly doing something before it becomes a habit. So, for the next three weeks, I challenge you to get into the habit of practicing safe home security behavior. Diligently do the following things and make them a habit. If you do, your home and family will all be more secure.
-Every time you leave your house or arrive home, lock the doors (with a deadbolt). Never neglect to do this. Even if you are running late, always lock the doors!
-Keep your windows locked at all times. Only unlock them if absolutely necessary and then immediately lock them again.
-Don't let your mail or newspapers pile up out of negligence. Pick them up everyday. Piles of mail or newspapers indicate to robbers that you are not home.
-Arm your secure system whenever you leave the home or come home. Never neglect to do this!
-Don't open the door to people you do not know. Ask for identification from repairmen before you let them in. Always look through your peep hole before opening the door.
-Keep some outdoor lights on at night or install automatic timer lights. Never let your home appear completely dark.
If you get into the habit of doing the things mentioned above, you will be making a giant leap toward making your home a safer place to be.
